Time for cranberries by Detlefsen_ Lisl H - Henry_ JedWe live near the cape where they do harvest the cranberries every year and we've never seen it done.Although this one is around a Michigan farm the process would be about the same.Love the glossary of words used before the story. What a treasure-recipes using cranberries. I personally love them!Love how they explain the process of the harvest.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

This offers the best of non-fiction for young readers, but will engage and appeal to adults as well.The process of cranberry harvesting and information about the cranberry industry are skillfully tucked into a fluent and fun text, using a young boy's first participation in the family business to make a business venture much more than that. Illustrations are both informative and heartwarming, with an undertone of color that lets the cranberries rise to the center of attention on every page, as they should.The repeated pattern: "Is it time for cranberries yet?" mirrors the typical "Are we there yet?", easing the transition and page turns from stage to stage of the harvest, processing, and eventual path to the answer everyone is craving by the final pages- YES, it's time to eat the cranberries!Back matter providing family, geographic, and economic details will interest all but the youngest and can launch research related to economics, foods, and Wisconsin.

A great story about the growing and harvesting of cranberries. Factual but told in story form based on the author's real life experience. Great book for children to be read in the fall. I bet many people do not know anything about the growing and harvesting of cranberries.

A great addition to the seasons genre within children's literature. Full disclosure: Our family is friends with Lisl's family. This association was helpful while reading because we have visited the marsh depicted in the story. The descriptions and illustrations are very accurate. For any teacher looking to frontload their students with essential knowledge regarding the seasons, types of agriculture, or a food unit, this book is a worthy choice.

This is a great fall book for preschool to 3rd grade. Nice to have a book that looks at other fall crops - something different to read w/ all the apple and pumpkin books during autumn. Plus, kids (and adults) will learn about harvesting cranberries in this fun to read aloud book! Oh, and great recipes included at the end.

Disclaimer - I am personal friends with the authorMy kids and I loved this book. It reminded us of when we lived in Wisconsin and Harvest was one of our favorite times of the year.I liked how this book was teaching my children about agriculture as well. It is important for them to know how our food grows and how critical it is to protect our natural resources. We enjoyed this book so much that we are purchasing another copy for my daughter's school.

We are in the cranberry industry, therefore, critique cranberry books with an eagle eye. My kids enjoy the book and the info is fun and factual. Illustrations are bright and cheery and their are animals on every page. Love this book.

What a great childrens book they learn about cranberries without even knowing.

There is a lot to love about this book. It is a great autumn book that goes into great detail about how cranberries are harvested. However, it doesn't read as a "how to"- rather it follows a young boy named Sam who is thrilled that he is finally old enough to help out on the family cranberry farm.Sam and his family set a great example of hard work, dedication, and the satisfaction of reaping what you sow. Any child who loves "things that go" will love the machining aspects of the book- from tractors to cleaners to trucks. Any parent who wants to encourage working together as a family and taking pride in one's work will also love this book.As a bonus, there are a couple of recipes that use cranberries in the back of the book as well as a glossary of some of the industry lingo. Though I haven't tried them yet, they look delicious!

Great book for the newbies, but also a nice resource for everybody that wants to know a structured, repeatable process to get going on network pen testing and the Basics of Hacking and Penetration Testing and it is a great book to get beginners up to speed on a basic penetration testing framework and other basic tools and it gives you valuable information and points you in the right direction to learn more and this book is a great resource and it walks you through setting up a pen testing lab and goes through various techniques in an easy to follow format and have gone from reading blogs and forums with a vague idea of how to proceed with this to having a clear direction and able to formulate measurable goals for myself and if you are new to this field and looking to get a solid foundation on hacking and penetration testing then I would highly recommend this book and if you already have a solid foundation of hacking because you were self taught or are in the industry then most of this book will be irrelevant and elementary, but could be a good review and he does a great job at taking a beginning to end approach pointing out areas that some often overlook that could help you be more successful.

This book is basically an outline of the tools a cyber security guy should be familiar with and the many ways the bad guys have found to penetrate computer systems. It is definitely not knowledge in depth, rather it is a starting point for further study. Note to the editors: please get a proofreader to go over this book. An important concept is discussed in this book: the idea that diseases come with a set of what Sontag calls metaphors, but what I would term associations, that have little if any relevance to the true nature of the disease. I can think of many current examples of diseases that are freighted with non-medical associations. Addiction is one that comes to mind. Another is the “epidemic” of gun violence, which, like AIDS, is being blamed on a marginal group, the mentally ill. Other less politically fraught include obesity & chronic fatigue syndrome, which, like cancer as discussed in the book, have the metaphorical baggage of somehow being rooted in the character of the sufferer. We would, according to Sontag, be better off with a medical model for these conditions, so that appropriate knowledge about them can be sought & cures secured.

Language is the essential vehicle by which meaning is transferred, and a deep exploration of language can reveal covert meanings lying beneath the overt text. Susan Sontag is one of the US's finest intellectuals, and in these two texts Sontag applies her piercing intellect to the topic of how language is used with respect to illness, how illnesses are used as metaphors and what metaphors typically are associated with an illness. She seeks to remove the mythologizing associated with diseases, mythologizing which almost invariably produces negative results.In Illness As A Metaphor, Sontag focuses on two illnesses, tuberculosis and cancer. Tuberculosis was viewed as a "glamorous disease" whose "victims" were the highly sensitive: "TB is is celebrated as the disease of born victims, of sensitive, passive people who are not quite life-loving enough to survive." Cancer, on the other hand, was seen as a disease caused by repressed emotions. Both TB and cancer were considered mysterious illnesses until tuberculosis was determined to be caused by a bacillus and was curable, while the etiology of cancer remains unknown and uncurable. Following the discovery of a cure for tuberculosis, a more dramatic shift was seen distinguishing between tuberculosis and cancer.In AIDS and Its Metaphors, which serves as a fine companion to Illness As A Metaphor, Sontag takes up the specific case of AIDS. AIDS and Its Metaphors was published in 1988, while Illness as a Metaphor was published ten years earlier, before the emergence of AIDS into the global conscious. Sontag, herself, ties the two texts together by beginning the second one with a response to critics of the first text and explaining how she was misinterpreted. Sontag explicitly refers to her own diagnosis of recovery from cancer at the time of the earlier publication, and her awareness that the metaphors applied to illnesses can be stigmatizing and thus harmful to those carrying the disease, even to the point of causing premature death. This stigmatization prevents people from seeking out timely, effective treatment.Sontag readily admits that thinking is not possible without the usefulness of metaphors. The thrust of her argument is to undermine the use of certain types of metaphors. In both texts, Sontag takes issue with militaristic metaphors applied to illnesses and AIDS -- an illness is an "invasion" which must be met with an "attack" preferably by the body's own "defense system." Sontag urges the abandonment of military metaphors for illness and AIDS arguing that such metaphors serve no useful purpose and may in fact have harmful impacts.Sontag's erudition is on display here, with her encyclopedic knowledge of the Western canon of literature and philosophy as well as US and French cinema, but always as a means to exemplify, to clarify, rather than to simply impress the reader. Therefore, these texts hardly are ones for the general reader. Nevertheless, even if the reader is unfamiliar with all of the external references from which Sontag draws, the writing is sufficiently clear that the general reader should not have any problems understanding these two "small book[s]." Nevertheless, these texts most definitely are intellectualizations of illness and of AIDS; they fall into the genre of cultural criticism, and therefore do little to the understanding of illness or AIDS as such, but, rather, how illness and AIDS are interpreted by society and the meanings attritutable to these phenomena.Although the texts are short, they are packed with insights. More than a single reading is recommended in order to discover the full richness of these two texts. Both are outstanding works which further enhance Sontag's legacy.

Fascinating. I had heard of Ms. Sontang over the years, but this is the first time I've ever read one of her works. Siddhartha Mukherjee mentions her a lot in The Emperor of All Maladies, so I thought I'd give it a read. She really knew how to write. Very well-researched work on the history of how society conceptualizes illness.

This is a quote from the book that I would consider its thesis statement: 'Theories that diseases are caused by mental states and can be cured by will power are always an index of how much is not understood about a disease. Moreover, there is a peculiarly modern predilection for psychological explanations of disease...Psychologizing seems to provide control...over which people have no control. Psychological understanding undermines the 'reality' of a disease.' Sontag traces, historically, the ways different diseases and the people who contracted them have been viewed. She spends time discussing tuberculars--waif-like, pale, romantic--and cancer patients--repressed, the 'cancer personality,' shame--then goes on to debunk these notions by stating that once the cause, cure, innoculation is found, the 'myth' or popular psychology of the disease no longer holds. In this edition, in the final chapter about AIDS and its metaphors Sontag writes that she'd written the first part of the book (all but the AIDS chapter) while a cancer patient and in response to reactions she saw in fellow patients. She felt frustrated or saddened by their psychologizing and self-blame and wished to write to others that their physical illness is a physical illness and the best route to recovery is to think only of how to find the best medical treatment. And she wrote this by demonstrating the history of myths that surrounded illnesses and the way these myths evaporated as soon as its true mechanism (the virus, or otherwise) was found. Some holes in her argument can be found in the field of Health Psychology, which has proved that optimism generates faster post-operative recovery or a heartier immune system, among other 'psychological' correlates of disease to illness. Still we speak of a "type A" personality and a possibility of a heart attack, etc., which I believe is not entirely unfounded -- stress creates a drop in immune response and other health deficiencies. However, I am a patient and a former psychotherapist. I was reared in psychology as others are toward priesthood. I grew up sent to therapists for any ills and was raised with the thought I be nothing but a therapist when an adult -- which I did become. Then I became diabled, from physical injury. My own disability is largely pain-related; the pain is severe and in locations that make it impossible to function. Much of my injury does not show up on contemporary tests -- EMG's, CAT scans, MRI's, bone scans, sonograms. So I turn to psychology. I know I've got a physical injury. But if it can not be cured (and I go back to my original quote: that which is least understood, we psychologize), perhaps I am, in part, a cause of it. This had been a comforting notion to me: if I can do this to myeslf, I can also undo it. For me, psychologizing helped put me in the driver's seat. Sontag at first put me in the driver's seat in a new, determined, knowing way. I know my injury is not something that is "in my head." At first, Sontag's argument was a weight off my shoulders, an eye-opener. I underlined the passage above: yes, that's right; they don't know what's wrong with me so they blame me. A doctor once said to me: "When I can't find anything wrong with someone I assume there is nothing wrong with her." Sontag set me in motion. She went into motion, knowing cancer wasn't a word to whisper (remember when we whispered that 'c' word?), but something to pursue with a vengeance. Her book was liberating. I know I don't want to be sick, unable to do the things I want to, regardless of how neatly one can analyze my personality and show otherwise. This is physical. Then reality. I've got sometihng and it isn't curable and it is debilitating. I am in doctors' offices all the time; fighting beaurocracy all the time. I wanted my psychologizing back. My security blanket had been removed with this "epiphany" of sorts. If it's not in my head, and I can't cure myself, and doctos can't cure me, I'm incurable. Her philosophy, then, became saddening. I began to analyze her: perhaps she recovered so well because of her strong personality, her [psychological] strength. It's a chicken/egg question. Sontag writes things that are clear and other things that can be argued. Overall, her essays have changed societal thought -- from Against Interpretation to On Photography to Illness as Metaphor and various others; she is brilliant and a powerfully good writer. Anyone who can make us look at something in a new way, make us think something through in a new way, is easily well-worth reading. Anyone who is ill, particularly chronically, undiagnosed or misunderstood should read this book. Agree with it or not, but read it. Read others that say the opposite, read about your own illness, but read this book: I would call it mandatory.

I got this book for class. Sontag is a tough read. That's not an understatement. But she makes great points about how we, as society, stigmatize certain illnesses. I think it is a very eye-opening book, but is so much more effective when this book/essays can be discussed, especially in an academic setting. The four stars is just because I didn't choose to read this book on my own.

I expected better from Lonely Planet. From a women's packing list that included several shirt tops but not one bottom item (forgetting shorts, skirts, or pants to wear with those tops), to repeated mentions of the obvious (kids need favorite toys), to overly cute mentions of obscure fashion or trendy glam locales, this book was a disappointment. Also frustrating is that the ebook, sold as Kindle compatible, does not download to a Paperwhite. It only read on my iPhone or iPad. The font and entire page was super tiny, and I had to click on each paragraph to expand it. Also, too much of the book was just a brief paragraph with a .com address of several overpriced companies--a good online catalog would have been more useful. Most of the various packing methods were all *best for* the same four different types of bags--hardly useful or nuanced advice. Skip the book and use your common sense.

Some good ideas and lists for different destinations. Clumsy to read/use with odd shape and hard cover...too long and heavy. It should be published as a 7x5" soft cover making easier to use and read not mentioning a reduced price!

I hadn't thought of many things for my trip. This is a great memory jogger. I also appreciated the packing examples.

I'm a race walker, I walked a half marathon during my goal of doing one race a month (I got burned out after August). It's so nice to read a book by someone who runs about the same pace or slightly faster than you do. Most people classify themselves as a slow runner around 12 minute miles and my goal is to run a sub 15 minute mile. This book was super inspiring and encouraging.

Jill is truly an inspiration to me. I have my first planned half marathon in April 2017. I have been going back and forth on whether I feel qualified or even ready for a half. After reading Jill's book I am ready to at least give it a try. She is funny, witty, serious, emotional. I couldn't put this book down. I was sorry to see it end. Thank you, Jill.

Loved the book. I am also a Cleveland girl, so I know the streets and neighborhoods, which made the book fun for me to read. I am also a pack of the pack person, so I appreciate Jill's funny, clever take on life as a slow runner (walker, in my case). Jill has a great "voice". She comes across as honest and earnest. Inspired by Jill, I walked/ran the SNOball 5k this morning and am looking hard at St. Malachi in March. Jill...Hope to see you at the back of the pack some day soon!

As a runner who is just getting back into racing after cancer and treatment I found Jill's story very inspiring. It was exatly the type of story and advice I needed. Having previously been a front to mid pack runner, finding myself at the back of the pack is hard. But reading this book has made me realise that I don't need to be embarrassed and to be more mindful and set my own goals.

Jill writes the way I think. Salty, truthful and funny. I am a newbie fat runner, and I so appreciate the fact that I really am not the only one! This book is down-to-earth and real, and a fun read for anyone - fat, skinny, runner or not. I have experienced walking with a police escort (I wasn't even able to RUN!), and thanks to Jill's sunny and sarcastic disposition I don't feel as bad about being last. Thanks, Jill!

I've never read a past work by Mr. Begam, but I am a huge fan of courtroom dramas by writers such as John Grisham. I was happy to see that both men share a similar compelling writing style. In fact, "Long Life?" is the first book in years that has been able to hold my attention enough to finish it in less than 48 hours. I had hoped there would be more elements of a thriller, but in the end, I was satisfied with the author's choice to keep the plot realistic.If you've read anything about cryonics before reading this book, you will likely see very obvious similarities between the fictional Omega Terrace and the real Alcor Life Extension Foundation. In fact, the description of Dr. Adler's procedures are very realistic and read very much like the case studies that Alcor provides on their website. The only quarrel I have (as I believe other reviewers have pointed out) is the fact that Omega Terrace is portrayed as a for-profit luxury resort. I understand that that image is essential to the plot, but it could give many readers the idea that cryonics is reserved only for the very rich and is designed to be a money-making venture, which it is not.Overall, if you have an interest in cryonics and like realistic courtroom dramas, I highly recommend this book.

This is a page-turner, a courtroom thriller about a young, beautiful doctor on trial in Phoenix for first-degree murder. She practices cryonics - freezing bodies in the hope that they can be brought back to life at a future date. The charge against her is that, with the patient's consent, she performed a "pre-mortem suspension" on a patient who contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion. In other words, she took the patient into suspension before his bodily functions had totally ceased (and before the disease could ravage his body). The jury has to decide whether the "victim" is dead or merely awaiting reanimation. It's a good read, and it brings together issues of science, religion, ethics and the law in one intriguing case. I actually came across this book while purchasing Frozen by Larry Johnson. This is was a great read from start to finish. Robert Begam gets your attention from the beginning and holds it strong till you finish the last page. Whether you are a fan of cryonics or not, you will find this to be a good book. You can tell that the author did his homework and that helps make it a very interesting read.

An intriguing courtroom thriller. As ot was set in Phoenix, I was especially caught up in my hometown's descriptions. Well done!

Long Life was an excellent book along the lines of John Grisham with a very interesting subject, cryonics.

A real page-turner written by a defense lawyer with a lot of experience, and, a critical eye for a good story. He casts a sympathetic look at the prosecutors, but also gives a good account of "those other guys" in the Law and Order, etc. genre. A great read.

LONG LIFE is excellent! Robert Begam has succeeded in creating a new and exciting courtroom drama that exceeds his previous novel FIREBALL and that book was terrific. Several of the same great characters return in LONG LIFE and they are more clever than ever. The story explodes into the courtroom forcing you to deal with your own mortality. How will you face death when the moment comes? Who will help you? What methods are available...and what is the morality of the method? Be prepared for a wild ride that achieves an absolute rarity in literature...you find yourself thinking, analysing and taking sides, all while being totally caught up and involved in this great courtroom adventure.
